Clifton College captain Tim Saulez produced the highest individual score of the match, 68, and Clifton’s Shiraz Perumal the best bowling figures of 5/37, but Westville Boys’ High won their limited overs match against Clifton at the Riverside Sports Club on Saturday by 50 runs.

The pitch offered turned from early on and runs didn’t flow freely, but Westville, batting first, cobbled together 162 all out, which was a decent return on a demanding track after they lost their openers cheaply.

Seth Simpson and Sean McGough put together the largest partnership of their innings, 59 for the third wicket, with Simpson going on to the innings’ highest score of 37, while McGough weighed in with 32. Kyle McGough played his part, scoring 25. Dalayan Boyce, with 19, batting at nine, made a difference, too.

Clifton ran into early trouble in their reply, with Westville’s opening bowlers, Lwandile Bulose and Dayalan Boyce, getting rid of Hayden Drieselmann and Byron Ward respectively, while Muhammed Malek was run out, which left the home side wobbling on 16/3.

Skipper Tim Saulez and Zach Williamson worked hard to compile a 34-run partnership, but Williamson then mistimed a shot over the top from Misbah Nair and was caught for 11.

After that, left-arm spinner Tristan Delvin took over for The Griffin. He was naggingly accurate and was rewarded with 4/22 from his 10 overs. Run scoring was painfully slow, but Tim Saulez stood firm.

Unfortunately for Clifton’s leader, the only other batsman to make it into double figures was Caleb Naicker, but his 14 runs were the host’s second-highest score, and that wasn’t going to cut it.

Saulez was head and shoulders above all other batsmen on the day, tallying 68 from 95 balls, which included five fours. But he was the last man out with Clifton having reached 112.

Dayalan Boyce, who dismissed Saulez, finished with 2/13 from 3.4 overs.

BASKETBALL

Westville Boys’ High showed why they are, in the eyes of many, the number one schoolboy team in South Africa when they met Clifton at the Riverside Sports Club on Saturday. There were a couple of clear differences between the sides.

The first of those was how Westville was able to exit their half comfortably and penetrate the Clifton defences, while Clifton found it tougher going to move the ball up the court and break down the visitor’s defences.

Primarily, though, the difference was about finishing. Clifton created opportunities, but they started the contest cold, missing plenty of buckets, which left them in a hole very quickly. The Griffin, meanwhile, were efficient on offence. It’s what has set them apart from others.
