Maritzburg College vs Westville, results, reports, 18 Jan 2025

20 January 2025

Maritzburg College‘s 1st XI had suffered a first defeat of the season on Friday in the Schools SA20 KZN finals after beginning their year with four wins on the trot. Unfortunately, for College, that kept them out of the title game, but they bounced back on Saturday to score a three-wicket win over Westville Boys’ High on Goldstone’s.

The Griffin, who had won three and drawn one against tough opposition at the Paarl Boys’ High Cricket Festival, won the toss and chose to bat, but good bowling by College prevented them from being able to settle in.

Karl Dedekind, especially, caused the visitors problems, and he removed three of the top five batsmen. He also got stuck into Westville middle to lower order, capturing three more wickets, to finish with a splendid return of 6/48 from 9.4 overs, which went a long way towards securing the win for The Red, Black, and White.

Only two batsmen reached double figures for the visitors. At the top of the batting order, Bhaskar Sewlal made 18, but one batsman stood out in the face of a challenging College attack, Tristan Delvin.

He shone on a challenging track, finishing unbeaten on 52 from 74 balls. His patient knock included some good running between the wickets, and it also brought him two fours.

Dedekind’s heroics with the ball were backed up by some tight bowling from the other College bowlers, who gave little away. Reece Willson picked up 1/13 in six, Daniel Nadasan returned 1/14 from five, and Dom du Toit snared 1/9 from five. Sam Hughes‘s 0/11 in five also served to dial up the pressure on Westville.

After 39.4 overs, the visitors were dismissed for 136.

In pursuit of a moderate total, opening batsman Daniel Nadasan produced a knock around which College could build their innings. He spent 74 balls out in the middle, struck six fours, and made 47 runs before falling to the bowling of Tristan Delvin, caught by Kyle McGough.

College’s reply had started smoothly, with Nadasan and Ewald Bester putting on 62 for the first wicket in 19.3 overs. However, Bester’s departure was followed by Nadasan’s demise a run later, and the end of Karl Dedekind after the addition of another single.

From 64/3, College advanced to 73 before they lost Luan van der Merwe. It was the spinner Ewan du Toit doing the damage for Westville. He was also staunching the flow of runs. He would go on to end a superb return of 4/16 from his 10 overs.

The Red, Black, and White lost Tian van Niekerk just before the century had been reached, and Reece Willson and Kyle de Bruin just after it was attained.

At 104/7, the game could have gone either way. Sphamandla Dzanibe and Dom du Toit ensured it went College’s way.

They shared an unbroken 33-run stand to steer the home side to victory with four overs to spare.

Dzanibe cracked a four and a six in his unbeaten 20 from 30 balls, while Du Toit struck three fours in his 19 not out.

Tristan Delvin supported Ewan du Toit well, snapping up 2/30 from his 10 overs.

Scores

Westville Boys’ High 136/10 (Tristan Delvin 52, Karl Dedekind 6/48); Maritzburg College 137/7 (Daniel Nadasan 47, Sphamandla Dzanibe 20*, Ewan du Toit 4/16, Tristan Delvin 2/30). Maritzburg College won by three wickets.

Only one comment on the games, and that’s that it is fantastic to see so many junior teams in action. Seven in all at u14 level! And that applies to basketball, too. Well done to both schools.

BASKETBALL

The Alan Paton Memorial Hall and Multi-Purpose Centre played host to an eagerly awaited showdown between the Westville 1st team and College 1st team, with the visitors having staked their claim to being the best in South Africa in the last term of 2024. College, meanwhile, remained a top five team in the country.

Not many teams manage to get the better of College, and even fewer do it in the Alan Paton Hall, but Westville did the trick, recording an eight-point win.

Overall, though, Maritzburg College enjoyed the edge on the courts, with their u14 and u15 age groups keeping their records clean against the Griffin.
