RUGBY

Playing a late afternoon game at the Sharks High Schools Rugby Day, on Saturday at Hollywoodbets King’s Park, Michaelhouse and Kearsney College dished up an attractive showcase of schoolboy rugby.

‘House held the edge throughout, and outscored Kearsney by five tries to three, but the boys from Botha’s Hill impressed with their unyielding spirit, taking shots from the Balgowan boys, but then responding with enthusiasm and all-out commitment.

Michaelhouse produced a good all-round game, with both backs and forwards doing their bit to take them to victory. The fact, though, that all five ‘House tries went to backs – Luke Davidson, Stefan Moolman, Aya Mkokheli, William Ridl and Jack Hughes – spoke volumes about the quality ball the pack provided to them.

Kearsney attack, also, appears to have shifted gears since the start of the season. It has become more incisive and exciting which, no doubt, has pleased the coaching staff. Their tries were scored by Connor McIntyre, Daniel Eager and Jayden Jonsson.

However, a tough fixture list has now left them without a win in five games. They’ll have the comfort of Stott Field to try and arrest that slide on the coming weekend, but Northwood will be yet another very challenging opponent.

Michaelhouse heads to Gilfillan Field, where they will aim for a repeat of a stirring victory over Hilton in 2023, which was their first win over their great rivals since 2016, and also their 100th in the rivalry. Hilton has 95 wins to its name, with the schools’ sharing draws on 10 occasions.

The rugby results largely favoured Michaelhouse, who drew one of the open age group matches, but won the rest. They also scraped a one-point win in the u16A game and cruised through the other u16 clashes.

Kearsney’s u15A side, however, rocketed to a convincing victory, but ‘House took three of the five u15 matches. Kearsney was victorious in the u14A game, also, and in similar fashion, Michaelhouse won the remaining three games.

HOCKEY

On the Punchbowl Astro, in a Friday night clash, Michaelhouse were stunned in the first chukka, when Kearsney roared into a 3-0 lead. Strong support from a healthy crowd helped ‘House fight back and, kudos to them, they never let their heads drop.

They gradually turned the tide against a very good Kearsney team, but it was not quite enough, as the visitors claimed an enthralling 3-2 win.

Incredibly, all three open age group matches ended 3-2 in favour of Kearsney. Michaelhouse, though, took the u16A honours, and won three of four u16 games. They also scored the only goal of the u14A match, but Kearsney picked up wins in the B and C team games.
