CRICKET

Westville welcomed Glenwood to Bowden’s on Saturday for a limited overs showdown in uncomfortably hot and humid conditions. In a tough and tight contest, it was the visitors who came away with a narrow seven-run victory.

The Green Machine lost Karabo Ntsieng, one of the heroes of their win over Michaelhouse, early, but Nathan Moodley and Krian Jugoo settled down and began to graft in the taxing heat. It was, of course, no picnic for the fielders, either.

Moodley made 12 before being trapped LBW by Sean McGough, but Jugoo doggedly held up his end and helped the score along to 102 before he was out, caught Seth Simpon, bowled Roxton Payne, for the innings’ top score of 38, which had come from 97 balls and included two fours.

Glenwood needed someone to take over from Jugoo and Sibonelo Phewa stepped up. He played a composed innings, treating good balls with respect while attempting to cash in on loose deliveries. Twice, he dispatched balls over the boundary for six, and added a four into the mix, too.

He also helped Glenwood advance their score to 139 before he was caught by Max Robertson off the bowling of Sean McGough for 32.

McGough was the pick of the Westville attack. He asked questions of the Glenwood batsmen with every ball and was rewarded with a return of 4/23 from 10 overs.

Prince Shezi, with 19 not out, did his bit to get Glenwood to 169/7 after their 50 overs. It didn’t look like a big score, but the pitch had something in it for the bowlers.

When Westville batted, Sean McGough was their mainstay, again. He batted fluently for 64 from 84 deliveries, with three fours and a six, but none of the rest of the talented Westville line-up managed to press on, although five of them made it into double figures without reaching 20.

Sekou Shangase came close, with 19, but he was run out when Westville was on 156/7, within reach of the victory target of 170. It was a crucial break for the Green Machine. Six runs later, they had two more wickets, and the match was over.

Off-spinner Kyle Bryan did a splendid job for the visitors, removing the first four men in the order – Nicandro Kistna, Max Robertson, Seth Simpson and Keaden McAllister – on his way to an excellent return of 4/21 from 10 overs, which included four maidens.

Captain Ntando Soni picked up 2/42 and Glenwood, who’ve been on a good roll, added another win to their list of achievements this season.
