Old Hiltonian Harry Bailey was joined by, among others, four Hilton College boys in late September for the Babanango Challenge, a fund-raising initiative of Run for Rangers for Project Rhino, powered by the Sport for Lives movement, to help raise funds for game rangers throughout Africa.
Harry, who completed his schooling at Hilton last year, founded Run for Rangers when he was just 18 years of age, with a goal of raising awareness and funds in support of park rangers.

This year’s second Run for Rangers event was held over the course of two days in the Babanango Game Reserve in Zululand, with participants completing 50km on both days. To complete the challenge, they needed to average between seven and nine minutes per kilometre which, in the rugged surrounds, was not a simple requirement.

But it wasn’t a race. It was about showing solidarity for the work of park rangers and Project Rhino.

Just 20 runners were permitted to participate and one of the key requirements was to raise funds. The four Hilton boys, Wim Ebersohn and Josh Aitken, both in grade 11, and grade eight boys, Adam Fitzsimmons and Rhett Beaumont, ran a collective 260km and brought in R67 900.
On Thursday, at the school, Project Rhino presented the four boys with trophies and certificates in recognition of their outstanding contributions.
Project Rhino also commented on Hilton College’s Facebook page: “Running these distances in harsh, hot bushveld conditions is hard. Raising funds in this economic climate is hard. These boys excelled in both! They raised awareness for Rangers – the men and woman on the frontline of conservation. Their commitment and determination is commendable – The Hilton College community should be really proud – they were true ambassadors!”
