Hilton College learners put together superb results in the 2022 matric exams. The school offers boys the options of writing either the IEB examinations or Cambridge A Levels, and the results were excellent in both.
Out of the 113 boys, 87 wrote the IEB exams and 26 the A Levels, with 99 percent of the school’s boys achieving a Bachelor’s Degree pass.
Tanner Bailey shone in the IEB exams, recording eight distinctions and an overall average of 92 percent. He was in the top one percent in South Africa for Economics, English and Physical Sciences. Bailey would like to study at an Ivy League university and has applied to Harvard, Brown, Princeton and Columbia. He will, however, immediately pursue a business degree at the University of Cape Town.
Leading performers
Thomas Roy, meanwhile, received seven distinctions and averaged 89 percent. Christopher Bagnall achieved distinctions in eight subjects at an average of 88 percent.
Apart from the two boys who scored eight distinctions, there were seven – Thomas Roy, Vumi Mbokota, Flynn Newell, Tristan Paton, Roelf van der Merwe and Zach van Niekerk – who received seven distinctions, a further four – Michàl de Beer, Justin Green, Christopher Harty and Oliver Lello – who had six distinctions, and six others with five distinctions.
Over a quarter of the boys who wrote the IEB exams, 28 percent, received four or more distinctions.
Hanlie Dry, the Director of Academics, said: “Eighty-four percent of all symbols achieved were a C symbol or higher.” She said the class of 2022 also averaged 2.43 A symbols per boy.
Seven Hilton College boys achieved in the top 1% in the country in one of six subjects (Afrikaans, Economics, English, Geography, Life Orientation or Physical Sciences), with the exception of Tanner Bailey who scored in the top 1% in three subjects (Economics, English and Physical Sciences).
A Level standouts
Among the A Level students, Felix Jenkins scored above 95 percent for Thinking Skills and above 90 percent for Mathematics and Economics. Cameron Gray bettered 90 percent for History, Economics and English Literature, while Kristofer Watt exceeded 90 percent for English Literature and Economics and scored above 85 percent for Mathematics.
Five A Level candidates were ranked in the top 10 percent or higher globally in at least one of their A Level subjects.
Hilton College said, on average, the school’s candidates earned one distinction for at least one of their three subjects.
“Each of the candidates has secured a place at either a top South African university or an international university,” said Alexei du Bois, the Director of International Learning at Hilton College.
