CRICKET
Owen Willows sparkled for St Charles College in two drawn matches at St David’s Marist Inanda‘s Fasken Time Cricket Festival in Johannesburg. He top-scored for Saints in their matches against Noordheuwel and St Stithians.
St Charles vs Noordheuwel
On Thursday, captain Thando Zama and his team endured a difficult opening day as Nories‘ Juvan Lamont got stuck into the Pietermaritzburg school’s bowlers, charging to 173 off only 139 deliveries, slamming 15 fours and 14 sixes in his aggressive knock. Liam Roets weighed in with 69, while opener Logan Swart made 65 as Noordheuwel powered their way to 400/8 after 65 overs.
Caleb Sharp was the pick of the Saints’ bowlers, standing strong against Nories’ onslaught to return 3/65 from 15 overs.
Ryan Clarke led the St Charles reply, scoring at just shy of a run a ball and hitting 14 fours in his 89 as Saints tallied 242 all out. Connor Simpson, with 49, Zama with 34, and Relebogile Mokoena, with 33, also made useful contributions.
Three bowlers picked up three wickets each: Heinrich Smith (3/61), captain Heino Ferreira (3/68), and Malan de Jager (3/24).
Still, St Charles trailed by 158 runs, and they were asked to follow on. They were up for the challenge.
Caleb Sharp and Owen Willows shared an opening partnership of 120 for the first wicket before Sharp fell for 62, having faced 82 balls and hit nine fours.
There was no let-up for the Nories’ bowlers, though, because Willows and Thando Zama then got stuck into the bowling, adding 138 runs in 21 overs before Willows was, at last, dismissed. He had scored 120 off 128 balls, striking 12 fours and four sixes.
When Zama was run out for 92, the match was declared a draw, with Saints on 282/3 in their second innings. The skipper’s innings came off only 85 balls and featured 13 fours and three sixes.
St Charles vs St Stithians
St Charles visited St Stithians’ Andile Dlamini Oval for their second match. Once again, Owen Willows led the way, scoring 73 as Saints totalled 246 all out in 63.3 overs.
Five players made scores in the twenties – Caleb Sharp (28), Tlotlang Kobe (27), Jayden Saville (26), Keegan Vermaak (26), Kaiyuran Naidoo (23) – but were unable to turn their sound foundations into substantial knocks.
Zaakir Hanslo tied down the batsmen with his accurate left-arm spin, claiming 4/42 in 20.3 overs, with eight maidens. Akhil Challa took 2/29 and Didier le Roux, who was once a St Charles’ boy himself, picked up 2/53.
Opener Ombesa Matsha set the tone for the St Stithians’ reply, hitting 11 fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 90 off 107 balls. He and Thomas Collins (69) added 120 for the second wicket before Collins fell to Relebogile Mokoena.
At the close of play, the home side had reached 175/2 after 37 overs.
Unfortunately, Sunday’s play was rained out.
