After both sides delivered big winning performances at the Sharks Schools Rugby Day, the meeting between Maritzburg College and Northwood on the Knights‘ Old Boys’ Day carried plenty of anticipation, and it lived up to expectations before College claimed a hard-fought 27-24 victory on Saturday.
Northwood enjoyed the better of the early exchanges and pinned the visitors deep inside their own half, but College’s defensive resolve held firm. When they finally worked their way into attacking territory, Sharks Craven Week hooker Theo Boshoff finished off a composed movement for the game’s opening try, with Dom du Toit converting.
A penalty from Sondelani Sheleni reduced the deficit, but College soon struck again when captain Rory Stanton intercepted a pass and released vice-captain Olwethu Kosani to score under the posts.
Two Du Toit penalties stretched the lead to 20-3 before the Knights responded just before halftime with a converted close-range try after sustained pressure on the College line.
Boshoff powered over for his second try from a lineout maul early in the second half, and Du Toit’s conversion restored a 17-point advantage. Northwood, though, refused to go away and hit back with two converted tries to close within three points.
The hosts pushed hard for a match-winning score in the closing minutes, but lock Sean Jansen won a crucial turnover before flyhalf Luthando Dladla cleared to touch to seal an important away win for the Red, Black, and White.
The overall record read six wins to Northwood, 12 to College, and one draw.

The Knights have been enjoying a strong season, and it continued with a 4-2 win over the Maritzburg College 1st XI.
Coach Justin Collins‘ young charges have demonstrated their quality on the turf, although their level of performance has not always delivered the results they have perhaps deserved. They are, arguably, the form team in KZN at present, and, ahead of a showdown between SACS and Paul Roos on Wednesday evening, they remain the only school to have beaten the Cape Town powerhouse in 2026.
The u16 age group was intriguing. First of all, the schools put out seven teams each – fantastic – and in those seven matches Northwood won four, College two, and the A-team clash was drawn. In five of those matches, no more than a goal separated the sides. Northwood scored 12 goals, College scored eight.
Overall, Northwood won seven matches, College won six, and three were drawn.
