On Friday, Clifton College followed up a thrilling win over Hoërskool Noordheuwel at the Fasken Time Cricket Festival with another win over Nories, but this time in a T20 played at the Riverside Sports Club.
After winning the toss, Clifton batted first and posted a competitive 162/7.
They lost their openers, Lawson Dinsdale and Muhammed Malek, cheaply, but the Clifton middle order then wrestled control of the contest away for the Krugersdorp school.
Bryon Ward and Tim Saulez shared a stand of 64 for the third wicket before Ward departed for an aggressive 39 from 28 balls, which had included seven fours and a six.
Saulez followed four runs later for 19 from 18, which left the home side on 83/4. They regrouped, with Zach Williamson leading the charge. He plundered 44 from 24, launching two sixes and five fours in a crucial quickfire knock.
Shiraz Perumal weighed in with an unbeaten 22 from only 17 balls, striking three fours, which helped Clifton to 162/7 – better than eight runs an over.
Gerhard Roolvink led the Noordheuwel bowlers, snapping up 3/37 in five, while Heinrich Smit took 1/15 in three.
Needing to bat quickly, the visitors’ run chase got off to a strong start, with Wander Roolvink and Kian Liebenberg making 43 for the first wicket before Liebenberg was caught by Daniel Rea off the bowling of Eliah van Jaarsveld for 18 from 21 balls.
Liam Roets, then, joined Roolvink in the middle and they advanced the score to 76, which was when Roolvink departed, caught by Tim Saulez off of Gabriel Vermeulen for Noordheuwel’s top score of 39. He’d spent 36 balls at the crease and hit four fours and a six.
When Heinrich Smit was the third man to fall, with the total on 99, Noordheuwel’s innings began to lose impetus, and two more men fell within the space of nine runs, with the left-arm spin of Blake Johnson responsible for two of those dismissals.
Roets was the fifth man out, caught by Daniel Rea off Johnson for 33 from 29. Heino Ferreira finished with an unbeaten 12, but Tim Saulez made a mess of Nories‘ attempts to accelerate, picking up three wickets in quick succession.
He finished with 3/9 from three, while Blake Johnson bagged a useful 2/16 from three, also. Eliah van Jaarsveld chipped in with 2/12 from two, and Noordheuwel came up 37 runs short, ending on 125/8.
