Rain and mist meant a showdown between Kearsney and Glenwood on Stott Field on Saturday was an arm-wrestle, rather than a free-flowing, running match.

After a comprehensive victory over St Charles the previous weekend, in which they counterattacked superbly, the One-Stripe had to prove that they could win in a different manner. They passed that test, but it was a tough challenge, which ended 18-10 in the home team’s favour.

From the start, they forced Glenwood deep into their half, which kept the Green Machine under pressure, eventually resulting in Oliver Ludwig going over from a pick and go. The visitors responded with a penalty in the 20th minute. Kearsney, though, opened up a nine-point lead at the break through a try from James Whatmore.

Early in the second half, the gap was back to only two points when Glenwood forced their way over the try line from close range.

Flyhalf Daniel Miskey extended Kearsney’s lead to five points with a drop goal and then added a penalty in the 65th minute to complete the scoring.

Overall, Kearsney claimed 13 wins to the four victories of Glenwood. The visitors won the u16A match, but they went down in the 1st XV, u15A, and u14A games.

Playing on the Mason Astro, where they hold an imposing record, the Kearsney College 1st XI scored a big 7-2 win over Glenwood on Saturday, but the convincing scoreline didn’t do justice to the challenge the visitors presented.

They were up for it and, at the end of the first chukka, it was 1-1 after an intense back-and-forth, with Glenwood enjoying some success with their press.

Kearsney, though, began to find a way through the midfield in the second chukka and struck twice to open up a 3-1 lead at the halftime break.

As the game progressed, Kearsney began to find their rhythm, their ball movement improved, and they were able to play with greater fluency and control. This allowed them to create more consistent attacking opportunities, both in open play and from short corners.

In the second stanza, the home side found their rhythm and added four more goals to Glenwood’s one to bag a comfortable win.

It was Kearsney’s day overall, with their teams sweeping the open and u16 age groups, but Glenwood’s u14A side, winners against Northwood last week, added another W to their record, outplaying Kearsney 3-1 for their school’s only hockey win of the day.
