Still smarting from their defeat to Hilton College in the title decider of the Switch Schools SA20 Volume Two KZN Regional FinalWestville Boys’ High found a measure of redemption on Bowden’s Field on Saturday, edging out their rivals by three wickets in a gripping limited-overs encounter that ebbed and flowed before tilting the Griffins’ way.

Hilton captain Robert Burman called correctly at the toss and opted to bat, backing a top order that has delivered consistently this season.

Barack Munawa and Ben Wilson once again gave the visitors a solid platform, putting on 26 for the opening stand before Wilson, unusually, departed cheaply. When James Peattiefresh off a productive outing against Durban High School the previous week, followed soon after, Westville sensed an opening.

That opening became a decisive window when Hilton lost three wickets in the space of 10 balls. Left-arm spinner Ewan du Toit was at the heart of it, first having Burman caught for six and then removing the stubborn Munawa for 32. Sandwiched between those dismissals was the run out of Obakeng Motsepa, leaving Hilton reeling on 54/5 and searching for stability.

That stability arrived through Luke Wilson and Sange Qangule, who combined composure with timely intent in a sixth-wicket stand worth 71. Qangule was the aggressor, striking 39 before Du Toit struck again to break the partnership. Another run out – Sean Burman was the unfortunate victim – stalled Hilton’s momentum once more, but Wilson dug in impressively to shepherd the tail.

With Benoit Rey for company, Wilson added a further 23 runs and moved agonisingly close to a half-century before falling for a well-crafted 48, having faced 83 balls and struck four fours and a six.

Once he was dismissed with the score on 154, the innings wrapped up quickly, with Hilton being bowled out for 162 in 49.2 overs.

Du Toit led Westville’s bowling effort with an excellent 3/30 from his 10 overs, while Jamie Hasselbach’s lively spell of 2/20 from five ensured Hilton were never allowed to fully cut loose.

In reply, Aidan Baudach and Du Toit laid a solid foundation, their 58-run opening stand carrying Westville into the 13th over before du Toit was caught for 19. After skipper Kyle McGough fell cheaply, Baudach found a willing partner in Liam de Villiers, and they added 45 brisk runs to push the Griffins into a commanding position.

De Villiers’ cameo ended via a sharp run out for 22, but Baudach continued on to a composed half-century, eventually bowled by Rey for 52 off 64 balls. When Westville slipped to 137/7, still needing 26, Hilton briefly threatened a twist.

However, calm finishing from Misbah Nair (19), Aarin Rasmussen (13 not out) and Hasselbach (12 not out) saw the hosts home with 14.1 overs to spare, sealing a satisfying victory despite Rey’s excellent return of 4/29.

Westville won six matches to Hilton’s three overall, with the Westville u15A side continuing a dominant season with another massive win by more than 200 runs.
