Hilton College shines in IEB and Cambridge exams

13 January 2026

With a 100 percent pass rate across both the IEB and Cambridge exams, and an average of 2.4 distinctions per candidate, Hilton College is celebrating another year of outstanding matric results.

The IEB results for the 93 candidates included 2.2 distinctions per candidate.

Robert Hayward led the way, earning eight distinctions at an average of 93.29 percent. He also placed within the top five percent in the country in five subjects, which was recognised with his inclusion on the IEB Outstanding Achievement List.

André Boshoff, a star performer for the 1st XV at lock, received seven distinctions, finished with a 91.57 percent average, and was included on the IEB Commendable Achievement List for scoring in the top five percent of five subjects nationally.

Shaka Buthelezi excelled, too, achieving eight distinctions. Another four boys received seven A symbols, and three received six.

Eight candidates placed in the top one percent nationally in various subjects: Robert Hayward (for Economics and Physical Sciences); André Boshoff (for Afrikaans, Life Sciences and Life Orientation); Ben Erasmus (Afrikaans, Economics and Geography); Zac Sweidan (Life Orientation); Matthew Thomas (Life Orientation); Alex Pitman (Life Orientation); Daniel Askew (Life Orientation and Mathematical Literacy); and Chuhal Pillay (Life Orientation).

Among those boys who wrote the IEB exams, 82 percent received either A, B or C symbols.

Twenty-three boys wrote the Cambridge International A-Level exams. Rupert Wright recorded A-stars in Physics and Mathematics, while Jake Hockly achieved an A-star in Accounting and an A in both Economics and Mathematics.

Jordan Byres achieved an A-star in Chemistry and an A in both Mathematics and Physics, and Neil Grobbelaar achieved an A-star in Physics and an A in Mathematics.

Josh Grant achieved A grades for AS Level Geography, Economics and Business, while Robby de Beer achieved A grades for AS Level Mathematics and AS Level Physics.

Eighty-one percent of the boys who wrote Cambridge A-Level exams received either A B, or C symbols.

Stellenbosch University and the University of Pretoria consider anything from an A-Level A-star to an A-Level C symbol equal to a distinction, Hilton College shared.

Headmaster George Harris commented: “Matric results, as one measure of a successful schooling, are a culmination of hours of dedicated learning and application from pupils and teachers.

“I am proud of the results the Class of 2025 has achieved with notable achievements both from boys with strong academic capabilities, and from boys who have had to apply themselves with great determination.

“We celebrate every young man, and I thank every teacher, coach, and parent for the part they played in facilitating these results.”

Dr Alexei du Bois, the school’s Director of Academics, said: “We are thrilled with these results and especially pleased that 85 percent of all of our Grade 12 learners improved on their Grade 11 and Trials results. Our boys and staff deserve the highest praise.”

Reflecting on Hilton’s A-Level achievements, Katy McNeil, the Head of A-Levels, declared herself pleased with the progress that has been made. “Hilton College’s A Level cohort continues to grow,” she said, “and this year’s outstanding results are a tribute to the boys’ hard work, resilience and determination, and to the expertise and commitment of our teachers.

“These results have opened doors to competitive programmes locally and internationally, with boys earning offers that reflect both their ambition and the strength of the A Level pathway.”

Hilton College, unlike many of the country’s leading schools, does not subject applicants to entrance exams. Rather, it relies on a dedicated support centre to serve those learners who require additional assistance.
