While the third term holidays were busy for KZN’s top cricket and water polo teams, with the Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket Week and Clifton Water Polo Tournament stealing the spotlight, Kearsney’s u14 water polo team was grabbing its share of the attention by winning three tournaments over consecutive weekends.
Their run of success began with victory in a local event at Curro Hillcrest. The competition immediately amped up at the National u14 tournament at Rondebosch Boys’ High. They were the only KZN school in attendance but did the province proud by going all the way to the title against a strong field.
It also took strong character to win. Kearsney’s record included a 7-6 win over Bishops in the quarterfinals, an 11-10 defeat of Wynberg Boys’ High in the semis, and an 8-5 victory against SACS in the title game.
Over the past weekend, they claimed the honours at the Hilton College tournament, again showing an ability to dig deep to eke out wins.
Kearsney topped their pool, thumping Jeppe 20-1, but had their record blemished by Michaelhouse, who won 12-11 in a penalty shootout after the teams had finished level at 9-9 in regulation time. The Botha’s Hill boys, however, bounced back and wrapped up their group assignments with a tough 9-7 win over Bishops.
In the quarterfinals, they beat Wynberg 6-3, handled a tricky test against Clifton in the semi-finals, picking up a 7-4 victory, and then took down Rondebosch in the final, winning 7-5.

To put the cherry on top, Kearsney’s Cai Terblanche was named the Player of the Tournament.
Water polo in KZN appears to be in a healthy state, especially in the younger age groups, and Kearsney’s success bodes well for the game in the province.
