Northwood, the KZN Schools SA20 champions, got their 2025/26 Schools SA20 campaign off to a winning start when their Stayers’ team overpowered the Umlazi Hub by 131 runs on Friday.

Playing at home, on the Robin Smith Oval, the Knights posted 162/4 from their 20 overs, led by 56 from 52 deliveries from opener, Ross McGlashan, who struck six fours.

Thomas Oosthuizen weighed in with 37 off 31 and Jamie Wimble clattered 29 off 16.

Sabelo Buthelezi took the new ball for the Hub side and did a fine job, knocking over 3/23 in his four overs, while Ndumiso Madondo picked up 1/26 in four.

Umlazi’s batting, unfortunately, wasn’t up to the challenge at all. They were bowled out for only 31, with Sabelo Buthelezi the only batsman to reach double figures.

Hamza Amla picked up 3/15, while James Searle and Thabiso Mtambo nabbed 2/4 each, Keegan Reeves returned 1/4, and David de Bruyn claimed 1/1.

On Saturday, the Knights followed up with a hard-fought win over Glenwood High.

It was a very good day out for Northwood, who won all 13 matches against the Green Machine.

WATER POLO

1st Team

Northwood was in action at the Clifton Water Polo Tournament, where they finished 13th, which doesn’t tell the story nor do the Knights justice.

Twice, they fell to one-goal losses – to Kearsney and Paul Roos – and they also lost out in penalty shootout to Michaelhouse. Their biggest defeat came in a playoff game against DHS, and that was by three goals only.

The Knights are a dangerous team, still ascending, and they competed well against some of the country’s top sides.

Northwood 9-10 Paul
Roos
Northwood 12-3 Grey College
Northwood 7-7 Michaelhouse (MHS won on penalties)

BASKETBALL

Northwood has been one of South Africa’s basketball powerhouses in recent seasons, as their back-to-back St John’s Basketball Tournament titles have proved, and they, unsurprisingly, scored a comfortable win over Glenwood in the first team game.

Despite the large margin of victory, 35 points, there are signs that Glenwood is on the up. Building consistency through the age groups will be their biggest challenge going forward.

Still, the day belonged to Northwood.
