Glenwood vs College rugby report, hockey, Top Schools squash

12 August 2025

The Maritzburg College 1st XV visited Dixon’s Field, in Durban, to face Glenwood on Saturday in the last match of the season for both teams.

The atmosphere was electric and the noise rose to a crescendo when the Green Machine score a converted try with a well-executed backline move within the first five minutes.

College drew level after 15 minutes when David Colenbrander went over next to the uprights after a long period of sustained pressure, and Dom du Toit knocked over the conversion to make it 7-7.

A Juan Viljoen penalty, then, gave Glenwood a 10-7 lead at the break.

Glenwood dominated possession and territory in the second stanza, but it was College who scored the only points, with Alanda Ngubane providing the finish after a series of pick and goes near the home team’s try line. Du Toit’s easy conversion kick made it 14-10.

Glenwood threw everything that they had at the visitors, but the Red, Black, and White stood tall to keep the hosts at bay and come away with the win and a season’s sweep of their Durban rivals for a second season in succession. When they achieved that feat in 2024, it was the first time they had done that since 2005.

Overall, it was a very good day for College, who lost only two matches, the 2nd XV and u16D games.

HOCKEY

At the 3 Schools Astro, Glenwood put Maritzburg College under early pressure, but the visitors soaked it up and then tore through the hosts on the counter to score an impressive 7-0 victory.

It was a special outing for the Red Army’s captain, Uyanda Dlamini, who bagged a hat-trick in his final game for the school, striking twice from penalty corners and adding another from a penalty stroke.

While Glenwood picked up only one win in the 2nd XI clash, the strides the school has made in 2024 were clear. In 11 matches, apart from that sole win, there was also a draw in the u16B game. College won four games by only a single goal and two others by 2-0 margins.

The visitors, though, owned the u14 age group, and their u16D team wrapped up an outstanding season with a one-sided win.
