With their matric dance scheduled for Saturday evening, Jeppe High School for Boys made the trip down from Johannesburg for rugby action on Friday against Westville Boys’ High, preceded by hockey matches and a smattering of rugby games on Thursday.
Unfortunately, heavy rain left Bowden’s Field waterlogged and unsafe for play, leading to the cancellation of the main games, including the 1st XV clash.
The past two years produced exciting and entertaining contests, both won by Jeppe – 31-24 in 2024 and 43-31 in 2023, but unbeaten Westville was favoured to win this time around, so they’ll be doubly disappointed to miss out on that opportunity.
While only lower tier teams were able to play, the results, which skewed Westville’s way, suggested that the advantage in depth lay with the local boys, who won seven of the eight matches played, with the other ending in a draw. Competition was tight, though.

HOCKEY
On the Astro, Westville roared into an early two-goal lead against Jeppe, who have put together an impressive season thus far, establishing themselves as one of the top teams in South Africa in 2025.
Unfortunately for Westville, the visitors sucked up those two goals and came back with a vengeance, ultimately claiming a 5-2 victory.
Jeppe held the edge in the open age group, while the u16A and u16B matches went Jeppe’s way, but Westville showed off their depth to score some big wins lower down.
It was tight at u14 level, with three games finishing in draws, while Westville romped to a 7-1 win in the u14C match.
