RUGBY
The St Charles College XV 1st gave their supporters plenty of reasons to cheer on their Old Boys’ Weekend by delivering a fine display of running rugby against Clifton College.
Craig Dwyer, now in charge of the Saints’ rugby programme, spent the past decade in New Zealand, and the influence of the Kiwis’ approach to the game was on show as St Charles strived to let the ball do the work and get all 15 players involved on offence.
With Matthew Fick expertly dictating matters from scrumhalf, Saints scored some delightful tries. Clifton battled away and their strong character was again to the fore when they scored the final try of the game.
Saints crossed for eight tries, with Raphael Ajibade claiming a hat-trick and Okuhle Peti dotting down twice. Athenkosi Qumo, Matthew Ludick and Christian Allardice also went over for five-pointers.
Matt Hammond and Wandile Ngubane visited behind the St Charles’ try line for Clifton.
The 2nd XVs finished deadlocked, while St Charles ruled in the u16 games. It was tight in the u15A clash, with Saints taking the win by a converted try, but Clifton enjoyed the better of the u14 contests.

HOCKEY
In the 1st XI hockey game, St Charles struck first with a penalty corner variation, which created a clear-cut scoring opportunity. Clifton, though, stayed composed and slowly gained control of the contest, with the experienced trio of Ryde Brisset, Zach Williamson and Daniel Hompes scoring to take them to a 3-1 victory.
Clifton also claimed wins in the u16A and u14A matches, but the depth of Saints showed up well in other games. They won six matches, Clifton won five and one was drawn.
