Both Glenwood High and Northwood School were among the winners on Thursday, day one of the ITEC Grey College Water Polo Tournament, in Bloemfontein.
In a high-scoring spectacle, Glenwood beat Pearson, from Gqeberha, 19-11, while Northwood outplayed Jeppe 13-7.
The defending champions, Selborne College, fresh off of a sixth-place finish against a very tough field at the SAC Shield Water Polo Tournament, played in Makhanda last weekend, were pushed hard by Pretoria Boys High but came away with an 8-5 win.
Affies opened proceedings with a 2104 shellacking of Stirling High School, while in an exhibition match, outside of the tournament schedule, Grey High beat Grey College, to take the honours in the traditional rivalry.
Northwood continued on their winning ways early on Friday, beating the hosts, Grey College, 11-6. Later, however, Affies claimed a narrow 10-8 victory over the Knights in a tight encounter that included a weather delay. Northwood were back in the win column towards the end of a long day, securing a 9-4 victory over Stirling in their third outing.
Glenwood had a tougher day. They went 8-14 down to Pretoria Boys High and were then swamped by Selborne, who ran away to an 18-4 victory.
The East London side remained unbeaten, having defeated their Eastern Cape rivals, Grey High, 9-4 in the morning.
Affies kept their record clean, following up on their tough victory over Northwood with an 11-5 win over Grey College.
Pool play will be completed by 10:00 on Saturday morning, with 11 cross-pool playoff matches to follow. Sunday will feature the five final position playoffs, with the title-decider taking place at 13:00.
