Michaelhouse boys, Sean Robinson and Speedy Walters, were part of the very successful KZN A team which excelled at the South African Fly-Fishing Association’s Youth National Championships from 4 October to 7 October.
The event took place in Douglas in the Northern Cape, and it included five sessions of fishing on different sections of the Orange and Vaal rivers. In addition, there was also a fly-tying competition and a casting competition.
KZN A finished as the runners-up in the team competition, while Speedy Walters shone in the individual event, placing an outstanding second overall.
The KZN Midlands is home to many beautiful rivers and fantastic trout dams, and it is pleasing to see the tradition of fly-fishing continuing at the schools in the region. The Natal Yellow Fish as seen in the feature photo, offers an excellent challenge, too.
Writer’s note*: When I was in primary school, enjoying a wonderful life at Clifton (Nottingham Road), trout fishing took place on Sundays. Then, if anyone caught fish, these were handed in at the kitchen that evening.
The following morning, they were served up at breakfast to the successful anglers. It was with much pride that one would go from friend to friend and share the catch with them.
I wonder if that tradition continues…
