CRICKET

Glenwood produced their most complete performance of the season on Saturday, combining an impressive bowling display with a composed batting effort to secure a convincing nine-wicket victory over Clifton at the Riverside Sports Club.

Inconsistency had plagued the visitors in the early part of the 2026/27 season. However, they put those struggles behind them on Clifton’s home ground, first dismantling the hosts’ batting line-up before cruising to victory.

Clifton captain Shiraz Perumal elected to bat, but the decision quickly backfired as Glenwood’s bowlers made early inroads. Within 10 overs, Clifton was reeling on 22/5.

Jonah Chaita removed both openers cheaply, before Vincenzo Loutz struck twice to dismiss Muhammed Malek and Shreyan Singh for ducks. Glenwood skipper Kreesan Pillai then accounted for Perumal for one.

Hayden Drieselmann, Clifton’s most consistent batsman this season, attempted to steady the innings, scoring 27 from 29 balls, including four fours. He shared a 31-run sixth-wicket partnership with his brother, Ethan, before departing.

Ethan and Caleb Naicker added 26 for the seventh wicket, while Blake Johnson and Keegan Watson contributed a valuable 31-run stand for the ninth as Clifton fought their way past 100.

Johnson finished unbeaten on 31, the innings’ highest score, with five fours, but Clifton was dismissed for 136 in the 40th over.

Loutz led Glenwood’s attack with 3/38, while Chaita claimed 2/12. Pillai delivered an economical 10-over spell, taking 2/21, and Esihle Gasa chipped in with 1/29 from nine overs.

Clifton needed early wickets to defend their modest total, but Glenwood’s batsmen had other ideas. Pillai and Komo Moloto put on 37 for the first wicket before Moloto fell for 15 to George Gooch, caught by Klinck.

That proved to be Clifton’s only breakthrough. Pillai and Sebastian Oertel then batted with patience and authority, putting together an unbroken 102-run partnership from 22.3 overs to seal the win.

Pillai led from the front with an unbeaten 75 from 82 balls, striking 10 fours, while Oertel contributed a composed 37 not out from 81 deliveries, including five fours.

Gooch finished with 1/29 from five overs.
