A fascinating four days of cricket at the Oppenheimer Michaelmas Week wrapped up on Sunday with T20s and three days of 50-over competition. Only one team, Hoërskool Waterkloof, came away with a clean record of four wins from four. Some interesting upsets stopped others from matching that mark.
KwaZulu-Natal’s best sides were Northwood and Kearsney College. Northwood’s three wins were, arguably, better overall, while Kearsney recorded the best win of all.
The Knights sent shockwaves through the competition with a hard-fought and well-deserved victory over King Edward VII (KES) on Thursday, which was led by their bowlers, who had the Johannesburg powerhouse on the rack at 29/6. Although KES recovered, totalling 124 all out, that wasn’t enough, and Northwood won with David de Bruyn leading their charge by scoring 58.
Northwood was back at it again on Friday, convincingly handing high-flying Jeppe High School for Boys a 58-run defeat, with De Bruyn and opening bowler Ryan van Zyl again to the fore.
It was, thus, a surprise when Waterkloof thoroughly outplayed them on Saturday, scoring a convincing 117-run victory. The Knights showed their quality, however, by bouncing back with a one-run win over previously unbeaten Grey College on Sunday. The Bloemfontein side had won their previous matches convincingly, but Northwood’s win gave them a 3-1 record after completing the toughest fixture list that any team faced.
Kearsney opened their account with a workmanlike four-wicket victory over Paarl Boys’ High. They no longer have the services of exceptional batsmen like Hayden Bishop and Ross Coetzee, both SA Schools stars, so they require more of a team effort, thus the “workmanlike’ description. However, if anyone is to assume the mantle from those two, it could be Asher Hollister, who has shown the potential to match the consistency those two demonstrated.
On Friday, they were trounced by King Edward VII, however, losing by nine wickets after posting only 83 all out.
On Saturday, they faced Affies, winners by 184 runs over Maritzburg College and by four wickets over a tough Michaelhouse side. So, that meant another heavy defeat for coach Matt Savage‘s boys? Not so fast…
Kearsney stunned Affies (feature photo, on Barns’ Field, Maritzburg College), dismissing the Pretoria boys for only 115 before clawing their way to a two-wicket win, despite crumbling to 80/8 at one stage. They owed plenty to their captain Keegan de Jager, who played a composed match-winning knock of 55 not out.
With Hollister (64) and De Jager (45) leading the way, Kearsney made 144/7 in Sunday’s T20 against Cornwall Hill College. Then they dismissed Cornwall for 110 to stop their opponent’s shot at a fourth successive win. It was impressive stuff.
Four KZN sides finished without a win.
Clifton College‘s batting failed to fire. Hayden Drieselmann batted well. His scores included 45 against St John’s, 44 against Cornwall Hill, and 37 against Grey College, but those were the highest scores by the Durban school in those three matches. Clifton’s batsmen made enough starts, but they didn’t convert them.
Like Clifton, Durban High School (DHS) was hamstrung by inconsistent batting. They made only 119 all out against Waterkloof and 127 all out against St Stithians in their first two matches. The fared far better against St John’s College, totalling 275 all out, but St John’s had posted 322/5, and they were held to 144/8 in their T20 against St David’s Marist Inanda, losing by 10 runs.
Glenwood had similar batting issues. They made 230 all out against St Alban’s, but the Pretoria school had powered to 317/4 in their 50 overs. In their other three matches, Glenwood didn’t make more than 126.
Sebastian Oertel and Jonah Chaita were their most consistent batsmen. Oertel’s 59 against St Alban’s was the Durban side’s best during the Michaelmas Week, while Chaita just missed out on a half-century, scoring 49 against Pretoria Boys High.
Maritzburg College twice recorded sizeable totals in narrow defeats – losing by 15 runs against Pretoria Boys High and by 13 runs to Paul Roos – and were twice knocked over cheaply, by Affies and Jeppe.
The performances of young Riley Palmer will be a reason for College to feel optimistic, though. He was regularly among the wickets and showed he knew how to hold a bat, too.
Hilton got off to a rip-roaring start, trouncing St Stithians by 10 wickets after rolling Saints for only 55. They lost a squeaker to Paarl Boys’ High by four runs the next day, then fell to KES and Waterkloof in their next two games. Again, batting inconsistency was a problem.
St Charles College, too, started well, outplaying a good St John’s College team by eight wickets. Like Hilton, though, they didn’t win after the first day. Grey College comfortably handed Thando Zama and company before the Pietermaritzburg boys suffered a tight two-wicket loss to St Alban’s and a T20 defeat against St Stithians.
Westville Boys’ High and Michaelhouse occupied the middle ground, winning two and losing two.
Grey College cruised to victory over the Griffins, but a good knock from captain Kyle McGough drove Westville to a good win over St John’s on Friday. Jeppe cruised to victory over Westville on Saturday before a strong opening partnership of 99 set up ‘Ville for a narrow nine-run T20 win over Paul Roos.
The Michaelhouse 1st XI, when they were good, were very good in wins over St David’s Marist Inanda and St Stithians, but Affies had their number. Pretoria Boys High captain Tim Gordon (116*) and Victor Louw (73*) shared a magnificent, unbroken 196-run partnership as they chased down 200 to win Sunday’s T20 clash, taking only 17 overs to overhaul House’s 199/4.
Nonetheless, Michaelhouse looked well-balanced. The pieces are in place for the team to perform well in the fourth term.
The Tuskers Invitation side also put together a two wins and two losses record, beating the CSA Invitation XI by nine wickets and Glenwood by three wickets. Their line-up included Daniel Nadasan and Sphamandla Dzanibe, formerly of Maritzburg College, and Kwanele Nqayi, who represented St Charles. All three made telling contributions.
