Westville 1st XI wins at College, basketball honours to College

20 January 2026

For a third consecutive day, following two days of action in the Switch Schools SA20 KZN Regional final, Westville Boys’ High’s 1st XI took to the field in Pietermaritzburg, rounding off their busy week with a limited overs clash against Maritzburg College on Goldstone’s on Saturday.

After winning the toss, Griffins’ skipper Kyle McGough chose to bat, but his side struggled to gain early momentum. After the opening stand was broken on 28, two more wickets fell in quick succession to leave Westville wobbling on 30/3 from 8.2 overs.

Stability arrived through Aidan Baudach and Tristin Delvin, who blunted College’s attack with a vital fourth-wicket partnership worth 84 runs.

Delvin was the first to go, caught by Greg Hosking off Luke Venter for a well-compiled 36, while Baudach continued to anchor the innings. He advanced the score to 129 before becoming the sixth wicket to fall, having top-scored with a patient 59 from 90 balls, including seven boundaries.

Two deliveries later, Westville slipped to 129/7 and faced a precarious situation with more than 16 overs still to bat. Aarin Rasmussen and Jamie Hasselbach then produced a crucial eighth-wicket stand of 63 to lift the visitors out of trouble.

Hasselbach contributed 31 from 44 balls, striking two fours and a six, while Rasmussen batted through the remainder of the innings to finish unbeaten on 40 from 58 deliveries, with Liam de Villiers adding a lively 19 not out as Westville closed on a competitive 216/8.

For College, Reece Willson struck early and ended with 3/38 from 10 overs, while Luke Venter was the most economical and effective, claiming 3/26 from seven.

In reply, Maritzburg College began cautiously, with Akhil Bharath and Kyle de Bruyn putting on 36 for the first wicket. Bharath was dismissed for 15, caught by Baudach off Hasselbach, and when three wickets fell in the fifties, College found themselves under pressure on 59/4.

Hasselbach removed two of the top four, while Rasmussen struck twice to dismiss Willson and Dom du Toit. Luan van der Merwe battled hard for his 44, but his run out proved a decisive blow. When James Pembridge followed soon after, College was clinging on with the total on 134/8.

Westville wrapped up a convincing 62-run victory shortly thereafter, bowling College out for 154. Hasselbach led the way with 3/24, Rasmussen claimed 2/27, and McGough added 2/30 to cap a disciplined all-round performance.

Rain in Westville led to some matches being called off, unfortunately. In the 13 matches played, though, the competition was keen, with Westville picking up eight wins and College five.

BASKETBALL

After making a strong start, Westville fell victim to College’s speed and intensity in the clash of the 1st teams in the Alan Paton Memorial Hall.

The Red, Black, and White took the early blows in their stride, recoiled, reloaded, and hit back hard to run out the winners by an 18-point margin.

WATER POLO

Maritzburg College came out of the gate hot, scorching Westville as they raced into a swift 4-0 lead in the 1st team game. The Griffins regrouped, though, and clawed their way back into the contest by the end of the first chukka, which they ended trailing by only one.

With the bit between their teeth, Westville continued their good run in the second chukka and went into halftime leading 7-4.

There was little to separate the sides in the second half, with Westville edging it 5-4 to come out with a 12-8 win.

College, whose programme has been rebuilding and making steady progress over the past couple of seasons, gave a good account of themselves, with Westville winning three matches to two at the senior level.

The Griffins also won the two u15 games comfortably, but College went three for three at u14 level.
