A fine, near-century from Ross McGlashan was the standout feature of Northwood’s encounter with Hilton College, a match that ultimately fell victim to the weather but still produced nearly 78 overs of competitive cricket.

Hilton won the toss on the Hart-Davis Oval and elected to bowl, a decision that is often rewarded on their home turf. On this occasion, however, the breakthrough proved elusive.

Northwood openers David de Bruyn and McGlashan negotiated the early movement with assurance, laying a solid foundation as they pushed the score along steadily. It took the hosts almost 13 overs to strike, by which time the pair had added 68 for the first wicket.

De Bruyn was eventually dismissed for a well-compiled 33, caught by wicketkeeper Ben Wilson off the left-arm seam of Sean Burman, but his departure merely ushered in a more dominant phase from McGlashan. The right-hander assumed control of the innings, guiding Northwood to 98 before Josh Mills was removed for 15 by off-spinner Benoit Rey.

Partnerships continued to define the Knights‘ innings. McGlashan combined effectively with Keegan Reeves in a stand worth 41, before adding a further 40 alongside Luc Boyall, as Northwood built towards a strong total.

Agonisingly, McGlashan fell just short of a hundred, caught by James Peattie off Luke Wilson for an excellent 94 from 122 balls. His innings featured six boundaries and three towering sixes and was the cornerstone of Northwood’s effort.

With the Knights’ talisman gone, momentum swung Hilton’s way. From a promising 192/4, Northwood stumbled to 199/7 before eventually being dismissed for 234. Late impetus was provided by James Searle, who struck a lively 22 from 19 deliveries, including a four and a six, to push the total to 234 all out.

Hilton’s bowlers shared the spoils, with Luke Wilson leading the way. He accounted for McGlashan and two other middle-order batsmen to finish with the neat figures of 3/37 from 10 overs. Rey claimed 2/42 with his off-spin, while new-ball bowler Sange Qangule chipped in with 2/44.

In reply, Hilton was pegged back early as Northwood applied pressure with the ball, reducing the hosts to 30/2 in the 11th over. Captain Robert Burman and opener Ben Wilson then stabilised the innings with a measured 55-run partnership for the third wicket.

Burman was eventually bowled by Searle for a composed 33, while Wilson continued to graft before falling for a determined 39, with the score on 106.

Shortly thereafter, worsening weather intervened, bringing an early end to the contest with Hilton on 114/4 after 29.2 overs.

Reeves impressed with 2/31 from seven overs, while Mills delivered an outstandingly economical spell, picking up a wicket while conceding just seven runs in 6.2 overs, as the elements had the final say.

Overall, Northwood won five matches to two, including an extraordinary u14B contest by only two runs after the sides combined for 502 runs.

WATER POLO

The Hilton College 1st team was in Makhanda for the St Andrew’s College Shield, the first big tournament of the season, facing a top-quality field from around the country.

They exhibited some early season inconsistency, but were somewhat unfortunate to go down to SACS, the only side to go through the group stage unbeaten, after a penalty shootout.

Coach Paul Martin‘s boys were at their best in a playoff win over St John’s College, but they eventually had to settle for sixth after going down to Clifton by a single goal.
