Northwood holds on for eight-run win over Glenwood

Superb contributions from skipper Kyle White (feature photo) and Kyle Mills proved decisive as Northwood edged out a spirited Glenwood side by eight runs in a tense 45-over clash on Dixon’s Field on Saturday.

White won the toss and chose to bat first, but the Knights were rocked early when Ross McGlashan fell in just the second over. David de Bruyn and Thomas Oosthuizen dug in to steady the innings with a stand of 53, though it came at a sluggish pace, using up 116 deliveries.

When De Bruyn departed for 21, caught by Kenzo Mchunu off Kreesan Pillai, White entered with his side desperate for impetus. He delivered, lifting the run rate and adding 23 with Oosthuizen before the latter was run out for 33.

Luc Boyall then provided vital support, sharing in a 75-run partnership with his captain that turned the innings Northwood’s way. Boyall went for 26 in the final over, and White followed two balls later, but not before producing a superb 81 from 73 balls, peppered with seven boundaries. Thanks largely to his efforts, Northwood closed on 188/6.

Pillai spearheaded the Glenwood attack with 3/22, while new-ball bowler Jonah Chaita impressed with 1/11 in four probing overs.

Chasing 189, Glenwood made a measured start as Olwami Zondi and Karabo Ntsieng put on 26. After Zondi’s dismissal, the scoring slowed, but Ntsieng and Pillai added 17 more before Pillai was dismissed for eight.

The innings came alive when Ntsieng and Bandile Mbatha shared an 83-run partnership that threatened to swing the contest in Glenwood’s favour. Mbatha struck a brisk 51 from 60 deliveries, including four fours and a six, before Jordan Matthews claimed his wicket.

That breakthrough sparked a wobble. Krian Jugoo was dismissed for nine, and then Ntsieng’s marathon innings ended in the 40th over for 51 from 100 balls, without a single boundary, leaving Glenwood 144/5.

Kyle Bryan and Mishael Gunawardana injected late momentum, adding 25 in just 17 balls, but White halted the onslaight, having Bryan caught for eight. Gunawardana hit three fours in a lively 21 off 15, but fell to Josh Mills in the 44th over. Moments later, Mchunu was run out, leaving Glenwood reeling at 174/9.

They battled to 180, but, fittingly, it was White who had the final say, dismissing Chaita to clinch the win.

Mills, meanwhile, was outstanding in support of his captain. He led the Knights’ attack with 4/39 from nine overs, pouched two catches, and played a hand in Mchunu’s run out.

White capped a memorable all-round performance with 2/11 from three overs to go with his match-winning innings.
